this is my friend gwendolen, we've known each other since 10th grade, for a long time we were very, very close, then not so, now, good friends again. she is a photographer (Indian Country) and she will be going back to iraq on tuesday.
it is extra special when you rediscover someone. for me our relationship has a lot to do with mutual dedication to a life long pursuit, not surprising that it would revolve around our work considering that we met because at 15 we each opted to spend our summer vacation at school.
the drawing on the wall is a self portrait at 5, the girl who made it is most definitely a part of my extended family. I spent the evening with her tonight because it was my way of making sure she comes home safely; she was embedded at the beginning of the war, but apparently it is a more dangerous trip now. sometimes i think my life is tough, sometimes i know that it is not.
