tonite i went to icp for the opening of the andré kertész exhibition. it is a beauty and well worth seeing.
i must admit however, that i never understood completely what the fuss was all about even though he was one of those photographers who were considered to be pivotal when i was in school. seeing the show and the way the images were presented changed that, the work is astounding. many of the old standards were on display but presented much, much smaller than you might be familiar with from books or other shows, yet this was how he printed them and their impact is incredible. i understand that the book is gorgeous and presents the work in this same way.
also opening was a group show of 30 photographers who have photographed the current situation in el salvador. hands down this is some of the most compelling work i have ever seen. the horror, the beauty, the solidarity and the brutality of that country and its struggle are so powerfully displayed. i was deeply moved.
