nick's eulogy for my mom:
When Risha passed I decided that I want to commemorate her life with a tattoo of her name over my heart. While this isn’t the uncommon way to remember someone, it was still special to me considering I had nothing else written on my body. A few days ago I showed a friend and she asked “Don’t you think she would be so angry that you got a tattoo? My grandmother would KILL ME if I ever thought about doing something like that. I responded to her, “You clearly didn’t know Risha”. Risha was my grandmother, but she was not your typical grandmother. When I was 15 Risha sent me a book about proper condom use, something that would soon become a running joke in my house. When I was 17 Risha smoked a Joint with me in her house in Austerlitz NY, tucked me into bed, and put on an Adrian brody movie she had already seen only to do commentary for the entire movie talking about how bad it was. There was point when I was in college that Risha was going on more dates than I was in college. This was person who was never defined by age, and wasn’t concered with what one was supposed to be doing, rather she did the things that she wanted to do. Whether it was racing sportscars with Monroe or opening up Espiritu in the 80’s, she followed her heart and did what she love. Her independent spirit will continue to inspire me to follow my heart and not be concerned with what one is supposed to do. animus - May 10, 2015 |
