Iraqi Prisoners Marched Naked Through Park
by distributethis on April 28, 2003
Is this story true? Amnesty International and the US Military are investigating the account of several Iraqis who, after being caught trying to enter an area where weapons were stored, we stripped by American GIs, and paraded around the park with the words "Ali Baba - Thief" painted on their chests in Arabic.

I'm all for a little frat-house fun with out new buddies, but this seems to be a gross violation of both the Geneva Convention and Good Common Sense.
Messages:

These days street justice seems to be the only way to get through these people. We're trying to help them rebuild what's left of their country and in return they kill our (USA) troops and loot materials. It sends a strong message: don't bite the hand that feeds you!
justice4all - Apr 30, 2004

I have to agree. These men were allegedly stealing military supplies and other goods. The military personnel were given the idea from the local people. The US military didn't come up with it by themselves and they didn't do what they did arbitrarily, there was good reason.

What a strange idea of 'justice' the American people appear to have. Invade another country, then take people of a different culture and make them break our taboos (let alone theirs) in front of their neighbours and the world's press, just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Then say the allegation - without proof - that they were guilty is enough to explain the humiliation they went through. Then wonder why the occupied people start to riot and rebel. Then complain as the body bags of US soldiers build up. Then fail to see any connection at all. It'd be laughable if you hadn't dragged my puppet 'prime minister' into this debacle. Sympathy after 911? All used up now. Sorry, but you people deserve what you're getting. Although really no one deserves to die just because you couldn't elect someone with a measurable IQ as your president.

As a woman I am appalled. This is a violation of basic human rights. Womens groups should be voicing anger at this because we normally do if this was done to women. It seems that because these are Iraqui males, and no doubt Islamic that we have no concern. This amount s to rape and definitely torture. The U.S. military and the U.S. govt MUST apologize and make amends, as this is unforgivable. This should also make us look internally at what maybe happening in our own prisons here in the U.S.
Miriam - Apr 30, 2004

In what war have American forces treated prisoners humanely? Not during the American Revolutionary War, nor in any since. That is why Frank Snepp, a CIA information analyst working at the United States' embasy in Saigon was silenced after his book "A Decent Interval" was removed from public view by order of the Supreme Court, and his First Amendment rights were preemptively cancelled. He wrote that North Vietnamese prisoners, held at the American embasy, were handcuffed and thrown live into the sea from helicopters, rather than allow them to be freed by advancing North Vietnamese forces. The US will never admit to the American public that its MIA's and POW's received a similar treatment as a result.

it is obvoius and unfortunate, that america went to war with no good reasons. such as oil, Halliburton company profits (bush-cheney-saudi joint company). and not what bush cliamed freedom, mass destruction, lies......
Bush made america monster

American citizens need to become a lot smarter or stupider!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tom - Apr 30, 2004

I wish clinton was back in the office. we do have a stupid president that is runing around like a covboy. people hate us as american people now. look what are we doing we invade a country becasue of "weapons of mass distruction. distroy there civilization acuse sadddam as a dictator. Well well his is not the only one. what happen to the other middleastern presidents they are worse. you got the saudi family, jordan and syria and egypt . all the presidents are the same dictators and no diffrence between them and saddam. I dont see any diffrence. what i am sad about is the iraqi people and there life, our troop and their life. And we as americans are stupid, we know now as a fact that we invaded iraq for oil, not for anything else. and we are not stoping it. all this money could have been paid for medicare/medicad or to provide some kind of insurance plans for us like canadians, or provide free education. we have lost so many soldiers life in this war because of president bush for a lies, set up. Now after all this we torture those people that we invade .... dont know what else to say

I am an American. I am proud of America. I am a veteran myself. But if we disregard basic common sense, we lose. Two things: Two wrongs do not make anything right. Or better said by Ghandi, an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. And then what good can be seen of America? Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. As sure as we commit evil, we will recieve evil. We must defend ourselves. But we must not shame ourselves. We must obey our own laws. Sadaam is gone, it is time to leave. No matter how powerful a military force, it cannot change the heart and will of any nation. But injustice will create wrath amongst any people. And many more young soldiers will die as the result. Let us imagine invaders in our land. If they mistreat our people, we would methodically kill them. Think about it. Sadaam is out. We need to leave. The next government that evolves there would no doubt remember history and not take America lightly. We will NEVER change the hearts or minds of these people. Bring our brothers, sisters, mom's and dad's home, now. That is my vote. [email protected]

I have been to Iraq. Sadly I may have to leave my family and go back. Violence breeds violence. Hate breeds hate. Killing breeds killing. Understanding breeds understanding. Respect breeds respect, Love breed love. Need I say anymore? fortcampbellguy2000@yahoo
An American Soldier - May 01, 2004

I love this Country and enjoy the comments above. It is nice to know that we live in a country where people can exercise their first ammendment right of free speech. We cannot infer from the above picture without knowing the source or the reason why the Iraqi prisoners are naked. War and Conflicts can be a very convoluted being to understand. The media influences a lot of what people think. The reality is that only the soldiers and possibly the people who took this picture know why these Iraqi prisoners are naked. **Thought On This Subject** Never make an assumption based on someone else's data. It is better not to assume than to fall into a false assumption based on what data the media has poorly displayed.

Americans - I wonder why most people the World over have such a dislike for them?? "It's our way...or no way." Will Bush apologise????
Cal Burke - May 04, 2004

What ever the reasons are for these people to be naked in the open is unacceptable. We are Americans and it is our duty to show honor in all things. Like it or not we are the role model for the world and we need to step up and handle business oppropriately. While not all of us agree with the war we have reached a point of no return and must not desert the innocents whose lives are endangered without a sturdy government in place. We need to take responsibility and show the world that we are not the bullies they perseive us to be.
Rick - May 04, 2004

I am proud to be an American, but I am not proud of the way these prisoners are being treated. Nor am I proud of this presidential administration that acts as if they new nothing and were helpless. After 9/11 we should have learned that we need to focus intelligence better and I find it hard to believe that soldiers are able to get away with unjust acts without anyone higher up having knowledge. This whole war is turning in to Vietnam which was just another political war. We need a change in administration to gain back our foriegn allies and try to end this conflict without further loss of life. Lets be the America that was founded by our fore-fathers and not stand for the injustices upon these people.

Givens: 1. This war is opposed by many Americans. 2. Real abuse of Iraqi prisoners shames the ethical soldiers who believe they are serving their country honorably (rightly or wrongly). 3. Americans need to voice their protest in ways that are meaningful and effective.

Although culturally shameful, is it really that abusive to be paraded naked? Gays and others in our own country experience humiliation every day and no one raises a voice. The protests we should be making are against American violence toward Iraqi children (check the web--the photos are paralyzingly horrific), against the lies the government tells us. Don't get sidetracked by these comparatively weak acts of "abuse." Fight the REAL fight and let Mr. Bush and his advisors know that we as Americans DO NOT support REAL ABUSES of Iraqi or any other people, and that we demand an end to all colonialist aggression.
John - May 05, 2004

I am ashamed to be American after seeing a fraction of the horrors and abuses inflicted on the people of Iraq.

Have you forgot 911

You all have mud in your eyes and you all deserve what any muslim gives you!

PLEASE - May 05, 2004

The funnist thing is that when Iraqi people take hostages they treat them as guests supplying then with proper food and shelter, and this is how they pay back!!!! Face it people, who are the real terrorists? are they the people that are trying to take back their country and defend it from intruders (Palestine and Iraq)? or the people that are always trying to make up stories to distroy Islam, Arabs, and World Peace? I think if u want to use your mind for once, this is the proper time....
HOW LOW CAN U GO!!!! - May 05, 2004

This is human rights American style. Heartless and mindless. A picture speaks a thousand words.
Malaysian - May 06, 2004

It just seems strange that, when these naked Iraqi prisoners were being forced to march naked, there just happened to be someone there with a camera to take the picture, and that there are as many incidents coming to our attention at the same time. Anyone who took part in this must have known what an outrage it would cause, and how bad it would make America look. Sounds like a setup to me. Wouldn't those opposed to America just love to make us look bad by creating this situation?
Let's be serious - May 06, 2004

These people were caught fighting and killing American soldiers, yes, prison is not a fun place. The worst acts committed by a few American GI, STILL don't equal the dismembering and acid baths they received under Saddam.
This is over hyped by the unpatriotic unfocused "anti-war" machine.
Rocky Mtn Patriot - May 06, 2004

To RJG and the others of his ilk: Do not blame the populous for occurrences which you find distasteful. Please also note, that when does ANY COUNTRY treat it's prisoners of war like an actual human being? I am not justifying inhumane treatment of anyone, I am just trying to wake you up and let you get a little perspective. Just remember that Brits are not very popular the world over either - most are viewed as hedonistic buggering sex perverts because of a certain few who are, and I right?. So, before you throw your stones at the rest of America because of how some idiot soldiers acted - take a look at your OWN history and your OWN soldiers. The individual can not be held accountable for what the government or a government enlisted man/woman does - how is this my fault? How is it John Jones up the street's fault? It isn't. Get some perspective - be realistic - and actually think before you type. I am so very-very sick and tired of how the individual American is treated - as if evrything "evil" or "unpopular" a high ranking offical or other dumbass does to tarnish our reputation, we, the individual American gets throw in the mud with them. Grow up.
Gwuen - May 06, 2004

Like the Malasyians have NEVER mistreated a prisoner of war, or have been inhumne to anyone! Give me an F-ing break.
Malaysian-Go Away - May 06, 2004

Iraqi's treat prisoners like a guest, eh? What a crock. What are you smoking - because I want some too.
Nicole - May 06, 2004

History will show that George W Bush was the most downright horrible, if not evil President this country has ever seen. He makes me ashamed to be an American. This war is not right.....it's just not right.

I used to be a supporter, because we have to support our troops overseas, because they have the WORST JOB in the world, but now, I despise Bush. I was not too keen on him in the first place, but now I loathe him. Our government needs fine tuning and we will all be old - decrepit - and in our graves before it is the way it suppose to be.
