Tufa
by emilio on April 24, 2003
The use of the lake as a water source for urban California exposed these tufa towers, limestone formations that area result of the combination of high mineral concentration in one of the oldest lakes in North America.

It is easily overlooked by being just east of Yosemite Park- but beautiful in its own right.

Is this a recent photo? I remember driving by Mono Lake in the mid-80's and it looked like this.

Mono Lake is beautiful. Nice picture here. Didn't Ansel Adams take photos here?

I took this picture on 9/21/01. The water level is slowly raising, but I guess that it will still be more than a couple of decades before the tufa towers are submerged.

Jeff- yes, Ansel Adams did shoot at Mono Lake ... and that's as far as the similarities go :)
