Virgen de Guadalupe parade, December 12
We were very lucky to be in Mexico on December 12, when the Virgen de Guadalupe is celebrated. As the patron saint of Mexico, and 'empress of the Americas', she is by far the most important religious figure in the country.
Every village has its own parades the days leading up to this, even Sayulita where we were staying. We saw a Californian surfer blonde posed as the Virgen on a makeshift cart. At the end of the parade, near the church, a local guy jumped on the card and started fiddling in the general vicinity of the 'virgin's' crotch. It turned out she was tied to the decor to keep her from falling off the car as she waved at the villagers.
We decided to go to the big parade in Puerto Vallarta, a heinously touristy town comparable to the worst of Benidorm. The parade was the only reason to go into this town. You don't even need to go there for good food. They serve the BEST EVER fish tacos (on the large side, so they call them 'tacones') right across the street from the aiport.
