Zeballos River
by garnite on October 20, 2003
The Zeballos area was the scene of a gold rush in the early 20th century. As the town grew, the streets were surfaced with the tailings from the mines. As refining improved, the streets were dug up and reprocessed for the gold missed first time around. Today, the town has a population of under 250, but can honestly bill itself as the town whose streets were paved with gold.

I have read some of the stories of gold history in BC but never heard that one!
I had a couple of gold pans for awhile and hit every creek I could find,,,most I ever got were a few flakes. I almost went with Gold-panin-Bob into the BC interior to suck gold nuggets up from the wild rivers during low water. He had this back-packable dredge-suction gizmo and needed a partner...I almost took him up on the offer but had wives & kids to look after...he came back that summer with a fucking briefcase full of huge nuggets!!!
The next year gold values skyrocked and he sold it for a big pile of cash, bought the sister fishboat to my little one, got married and lived happily everafter---
---had I jsut gone along I too would have this legacy eh!

...Really nice picture BTW--I love that wild coast country~
