re: benidorm I think the big difference between that beach and Coney Island is that the surrounding area looks prosperous where as Coney Island/Brighton are not... Brighton is bustling but definitely a russian emigrant community while Coney Island can be downright poor and abandoned (though there is a revitalization effort)
