this is what is left of el jonquet.........

traditional houses turned into an intentional state of dereliction...............

and fancy overpriced want-to-be villas that only a few foreigners can afford................

i will try to explain myself.................

on my first visit to palma, around 20 years ago, el jonquet was a traditional neighbourhood of fishermen and gypsy families.........it was all modest ground floor houses..........dead quiet, as no businesses were (and are) allowed there.............

gentifrication was stalking around the corner........you knew it because the neighbourhood is so close to the city centre and real state investors were overpricing the area and paying the original owners really huge amounts of money for their properties............also because santa catalina, another traditional neighbourhood close to el jonquet, was already suffering the stigma of gentrification..............

little by little almost all the houses have been bought by real state inverstors and only a few original families remain there..............

about half the neighbourhood has been refurbished into the traditional minimalist majorcan style.............

the other half remains abandoned......waiting for the market of prices to rise even higher..................

believe it or not, the price of a refurbished house there ranges from 4 to 5 million euros.................it is the most expensive plot of land in spain and probably one of the most expensive ones in europe................
