i have never liked when people speak of their work (paintings, songs, etc.) as their "children" but the reality is, it's how i feel. i am much more sensitive, for example to how my work is treated and perceived than i am about myself. i can handle a fair amount of the bs that is directed my way on a personal level but i will x out any situation that threatens to undermine what i do in the studio.
(and yes, i feel the same way about my cats too)
