this picture of lauren & i is from dec. when i was last in la
today i talked to 2 old friends: lauren and someone i'll call eleanore. eleanore & i met in 4th grade, we were really good friends by 8th and remained so through high school, college and beyond. her youngest is one of my goddaughters. lauren & i met when we were both waitressing in the late 70's at a super-hip restaurant in ny, at that point i was older, now we are the same age. we've been through a lot: fabulous times and betrayals.
the difference between where i am now with the 2 relationships is amazing: one is instantly intimate, the other a struggle to capture any warmth. there are a lot of reasons for the difference, i just wish they weren't there.
