The wildflower you liked is called "teasel". The close-up looks delicate, but it is a rough, woody plant and lasts through winter into the next year. Teasel was originally brought from England in the 1830's. The tough, spiny heads were used in fabric mills to help make woolen cloth. Now, it's just a weed, but very beautiful. I added two more pictures and a link.
