this is a memory from my childhood:

racing to these water fountains in the park,

trying each one we encountered to see if it was working,

standing on tippy toes to drink
so as to avoid being picked up like a sack of potatoes
under someone's arm
and held over the bowl
to try to lap up the trickle of water
without letting your tongue touch the spout

trying to push that button down
(it was always so stiff)
AND drink at the same time

i am thinking a lot about memory
and how to preserve it
how to imprint her being
on my heart
so she is always with me
