Pelicans on Lake Tahoe
by hgpayne on April 29, 2004
While visiting Lake Tahoe recently, we drove all the way around the lake to get pictures. When we started out, the weather was fine, but it became quite overcast, bordering on fog as the day progressed. Still, I had been using my wide angle lens to attempt to shoot a panoramic. After that, I decided to put my long lens on to see if there was anything worthwhile to shoot. Just as I finished putting it on, a large flock of Pelicans started flying toward me, circled around, and then sailed past to land on the water. BEAUTIFUL. At the first instant I saw them, I started shooting away. I probably took 30 or more pictures of them as they flew by. BEAUTIFUL.

Remember I said I had been shooting wide angle panoramics before I changed lenses and had just got my long lens on when the birds showed up? Yep, you guessed it. All 30 plus pictures were taken at f/22 at between 1/15 to 1/30 of a second exposure. For the non-photographers out there -- this means blurry. I was panning with the birds, so this shot came out at least mildly interesting, but not anything NEAR what I could have had IF ONLY I had remembered to open the lens a little to say, f/5.6 and maybe step the ISO up to 400 from the 100 I had it at. Oh well... sniff sniff.... next time...
