today in the studio had a lot to do with surfaces, making them "right" but not letting them get contrived, cleaning things up but not smoothing out the "soul".
it's a part of the process that took me ages to master; i would always go too far and that would make me (literally) sick to my stomach. and i had to stay with that place a long time before i could sense when i was crossing the line between pulling out what i wanted and just making it all look too perfect.
it is also one of the most important parts of my process. before i came to terms with it, my most powerful work felt too arbitrary and everything else seemed almost plastic. it seems that it has a lot to do with being able to keep that organic underpinning intact.
