the last of the zinnias

i still go out into the garden almost everyday
i still expect to find something new
but all i see
are a lot of fat squirrels
looking for something to dig up and bury somewhere else
sooner or later they'll probably find my bulbs...

my pictures from a year ago tell me
this is when the whole process began
the first trips to brooklyn
it seems so long ago
as if i have lived 2 lifetimes since then
