5/4

my mother wrote so many poems
but there was one she was particularly proud of
because of it's prescience

it is a villanelle
and it is called "Man Into Machine"
it was written years ago
and it presaged the infiltration of technology
into human life

i so want to read it at her memorial
but i can't find it
I have gone through the box
where i put all her writings
twice
but
to no avail

i seem to remember her telling me
shortly before she died
that she had found it
but i didn't really listen
and now
i have no idea where else to look

i am deeply saddened by this
on so many levels

here is one of the poems
that i will read:

Root Song

While digging wild onion
out of the garden bed,
I casually taste the soil
from the back of my brown glove:
and catch myself erasing the line
between animal and vegetable.
I am content with
the silence of a day
when I speak to no one.
I see how deep my roots go down
into this mindless world of earth,
and wonder from where
this enchantment grew.
It could be the grace
of knowing nature unblocked
by the monkey hand of man.
Or the safety of a retreat
to a world
that has wrapped around me,
since I first looked out.
Slowly I remember
the child dreaming in me,
it's my world,
I am in control,
I am the alchemist.
A little seed,
a little soil,
a little sun,
I water it and it grows.
