still life...light
2/23
i am starting to have a conflict...
there are basically two ways that i use these fotolae,
both of which involve the exercise of pairing images
(or sometimes creating triptychs)
the first is as a journal,
sometimes documenting psychological or emotional states
but often just the passage of time.
by always linking to the year before in each post,
i create a sense of ritual
through which i can observe:
the change of the seasons,
the celebration of holidays,
the marking birthdays, anniversaries, deaths...
the second function of "daily bread" "the other side" and "neene in response" is to organize photos
taken when i travel.
i start with posts that are chronological:
i come back and fill in the days that i missed with an image taken that day
but then comes the work
of organizing all the other photos from the trip
into a coherent vision.
the posts need to work thematically and visually in a linear way for each fotola
but they also must be related each day across all three.
this discipline creates a framework,
a structure,
through which i can view the entire body of images
and it allows me to experience what i have seen
in a fresh way
when i have taken a lot of pictures,
and when posting them all takes weeks
a conflict arises...
by posting my travel pictures
i lose the continuity of daily process
it is a dilemma
a priority must be established:
to continue the travelogue
or to return to daily posts that reflect the present
either way there are gains
and there are losses
