i believe it was because of the extremely high winds
that there were so many dead birds on the beach

it has been very disturbing
to keep coming across them

mostly they are a bit bedraggled
sometimes half buried

but this one was plump,
its feathers soft and shiny
and i realized,
of course
that is because
it is still alive
but
just barely

the other birds,
the carcasses,
were sad
but this one made me cry
to see the line of its struggle
in the sand
