the cat sits
by his water bowl
staring,
as if magically,
it will entice him to drink.

i see a picture of him
from a year ago,
(almost to the day)
in it, a cat
who will be with me for years
he is only 7 after all

not this one though
this one who is now 8
not this one,
staring at his bowl

this one will only live
for as long as he can convince me
that he is not dying
even though,
right now,
i know that he is
