i was in rome
when i was quite young,
maybe 16,
on a student trip,
we went all over europe,
including to the former yugoslavia...

when we got to rome
we hung out on the spanish steps
where all the hippies were
and we felt very much older than our years.

when we went there on this trip,
i couldn't believe my eyes
what had once felt expansive and monumental
was in reality
quite narrow and cloistered

i still can't believe,
looking at this picture
that this is the same place i visited
so many years ago
