Well those dolphins have headed offshore but we have come across my favorite little sea bird (Though they also are seen on estuaries and lakes).
I have only known them on the open ocean of the Pacific West Coast while they pass through on the way to, or returning from, their breading time in the arctic. Their wintering grounds are generally at sea in the Southern Hemisphere.
They are about 6 to 8 inches long though appear smaller in a big ocean like this and often do a dainty little dance swimming in circles stirring up and eating tiny organisms near rotting kelp patches. They are very difficult to get near to and will fly in an instant. We will try for some closer pictures
