from notebook:
breakfast was at 7:00am and was announced by a monk hitting a block of wood 3 times. Breakfast was: green tea /water, rice, miso with soba, the sweetest, best scrambled eggs in the history of eggs, the sweetest and best little potatoes, pickles, veggie stuff, fish cake with cheese (kamaboko), and a giant sweet bean. Oh, what a sweet bean it was.
Everything was so super sweet and delicious that I wondered if the cooking ladies made the food extra sugary just to please us Americans. Maybe the monks just love sweet food, in which case monk food is the most delicious stuff ever! But then the next day there was fish, and the day after that there was some sort of meat... maybe the monks just didn't eat that part of breakfast... or maybe they're just special carnivorous monks! maybe I can't remember what happened next... Oh right, we took a bus to Kyoto Station.
