what is new?
2/12
ok
so this is what i wrote on the subway today
(after taking this and the one posted on "neene")
there is the thrill of things that are new
and then
there is the thrill of them becoming familiar
one is an event
the other a process
(ok, i added that part just now)
i think this (the latter)
is what i enjoy most
that transition
as it occurs in my work
as well as in life
and for years
(and years)
i have only had this experience in my work...
so much of my life remained the same
and the things that changed...
changed again
before they could get to this point in the process:
on the cusp between new & familiar
(and let's just say amen for that
for that pivotal moment in time)
as one gets older
the opportunities for this become rarer
because one gets so set
and you never even notice
that these things
these little "aha" moments are gone
i had this experience today
both observing & shooting
observing the things in my neighborhood that were "mine"
mine because i had framed them
and preserved them
mine because i have posted them here
(or there)
and
i had it as i went to take a picture
a picture of something that i was already familiar with
but
i was seeing in a new light
it's that time period
when you feel you know something enough to understand it
but not so well that its existence ceases to surprise you
