I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

I see a line of cars and they're all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a new born baby it just happens ev'ry day

I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it has been painted black
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts
It's not easy facin' up when your whole world is black

i am not sure if i am all right with this any more
it has become a device
a drug
something to take the pain away
but i am not sure it takes the work to a new place

it did once,
once there was a time when i needed to understand that i could throw everything away if i wanted to,
once there was a time when i needed to take those kind of risks

but times change
and hopefully so do i
i learned that lesson
i lived that lesson
it's time to learn something else

today,
especially today
the thought that total annihilation is an answer
no longer appeals to me
if it happens
as it always will
in some unavoidable, terrible fashion
the phoenix will rise

but i think it's time for me to save that energy
that response
for that situation
when it comes unbidden
and find another place to work from now:
a rebuilding
not as a result of destruction but out of desire
