funicular...looking down
9/11
so we have arrived in positano,
I am going to try to describe how this hotel is laid out
because it is truly amazing
the hotel is all built into the cliffs
and it is on many levels
the heighest is at 650 ft (198m)
(where the road bed is)
the bottom is just above the sea at 23 ft (7m).
Our room was at 438 ft (133m)
so there are sections of the hotel
on various levels
but they are not connected in a vertical line.
at the top there is one building that is about 4 stories but requires 2 elevators:
The top floor is reception & a bar
you take one elevator down to the restaurant
If you want to go to
the pool & spa
you get off that elevator and take a 2nd one that is directly opposite it
and beneath that is a gym
to get down there, you have to walk down a bunch of exterior steps
to get to the rooms,
you leave reception,
you walk down a steep hill and then down some steps
you make a right and you come to the top of the funicular...
this is a cable car that travels about 50% of the distance from reception to the sea
There are 8 stops:
7 is the top
our room was on 3
you get off at 1 to go to the sea
we don't really know what happens on 0
When you get out at level 1
you exit the funicular
and make a right following the signs to the beach
and go down some more exterior steps
until you come to another elevator
this elevator has 2 stops: 0 & 1
you get on at 1
but the distance from 1 to 0 is maybe 12 stories
and it is very slow
when you exit you make another right
and walk down this long tunnel,
you are clearly walking through the mountain
it feels quite damp
when you get to the outside,
you are a bit above sea level,
there is a bar/restaurant
2 levels of chaise lounges
and steps into the water and down to the beach
so all the time you are descending the mountain
you are also navigating horizontally (to the right)
i am not sure what the linear offset would be
but from the bottom,
if you look straight up
you can't see the top of the hotel because it is off to the left
(if you are facing the sea)
and hidden from view by all the foliage
the panorama in the thumb
was from our balcony
